Brewery Bartender Job Description
A Brewery Bartender works in the taproom or bar area of a brewery, serving customers by providing them with a range of beer options brewed onsite, offering recommendations, and creating an enjoyable experience for visitors. In addition to typical bartender duties, the brewery bartender must have in-depth knowledge of the brewery’s products and is expected to educate customers about the brewing process and the different beer styles available.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Customer Service & Sales:

  • Greet customers in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Provide information on the brewery’s beers, including styles, flavors, and ABVs (alcohol by volume).
  • Offer beer recommendations based on customer preferences or food pairings.
  • Take drink orders and serve beer, cocktails, and other beverages.
  • Upsell brewery merchandise (t-shirts, glassware, growlers, etc.) and promote brewery events or specials.
  • Ensure customers are satisfied with their drinks and overall experience.

2. Beer Knowledge & Education:

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the brewery’s beer offerings, including current and seasonal releases.
  • Educate customers about the brewing process, beer ingredients, and the differences between beer styles.
  • Host beer tastings and guided flights for customers to help them discover new beers.
  • Assist customers in selecting beers based on taste preferences, including offering recommendations for flights or pairings.

3. Bar & Taproom Management:

  • Prepare and serve a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including draft beer, cocktails, mocktails, and sodas.
  • Pour beer from draft lines, ensuring proper serving temperature and glassware.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the bar area, including countertops, taps, and glassware.
  • Monitor customer alcohol consumption and refuse service to intoxicated customers as per state/local laws.
  • Maintain inventory of bar supplies (glasses, napkins, garnishes, etc.) and beer stock.

4. Order Taking & Cash Handling:

  • Accurately take customer orders and enter them into the POS (Point of Sale) system.
  • Process payments, including cash, credit cards, and digital payments.
  • Provide customers with receipts and handle customer inquiries about their bills.

5. Health & Safety Compliance:

  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations, including food safety and alcohol service laws, per NC ABC.
  • Clean and sanitize bar equipment, glasses, taps, and common areas to maintain a hygienic environment.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including proper glassware handling and fire safety procedures.
  • Monitor for signs of over-serving or customer behavior that may violate brewery policies, state law per NC ABC.

6. Team Collaboration:

  • Work closely with other bartenders, servers, and kitchen staff (if applicable) to ensure smooth operations.
  • Assist with brewery events, including beer releases, festivals, or private events, where additional staff support may be needed.
  • Help maintain a positive and collaborative atmosphere within the brewery team.

  • Support brewery events like tap takeovers, beer releases, or community events.
  • Engage with customers to create a welcoming and fun atmosphere.
  • Represent the brewery in a positive light by being knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the brand and its beers.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Beer: In-depth knowledge of beer styles, brewing processes, and the specific offerings of the brewery. Ability to educate customers about the beers on tap.
  • Customer Service: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to make customers feel welcome and provide outstanding service.
  • Bartending Skills: Ability to mix and serve drinks, manage a bar area, and pour beer with accuracy.
  • Sales Ability: Comfortable upselling products, beer pairings, or brewery merchandise.
  • Cash Handling: Experience with cash and credit transactions, including using a POS system.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy kegs, and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to cleanliness, drink presentation, and accurate order taking.
  • Teamwork: Able to work well with others in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Time Management: Ability to multitask efficiently during busy shifts and prioritize customer needs.

Experience & Education:

  • Previous Experience: Prior experience in bartending, customer service, or hospitality is often preferred, but not always required.
  • Beer Knowledge: While not mandatory, prior knowledge of craft beer or brewery experience is a significant asset.
  • Bartending Certification: NC ABC Responsible Seller Training is required. Level One Cicerone is required after 90 days.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds (e.g., kegs, cases of beer).
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, sometimes noisy, and physically demanding environment.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and move around the bar and taproom for long periods.

Work Environment:

  • Brewery Taproom or Bar: The brewery bartender typically works in the taproom or bar area of the brewery.
  • Shifts: Expect to work opening shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays, particularly during peak hours or brewery events.
