Description:

The purpose of the Veterinary Technician - Outpatient (Room Technician) position is to assist the doctors, and Veterinary Technician Manager to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients, and to aid the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work at North Penn Animal Hospital.

The Outpatient Veterinary Technician is a key member of the NPAH team, responsible for a wide range of clinical and administrative duties. This position requires a strong knowledge of veterinary practices, preventative health care, and client communication. The role reports directly to the Veterinary Technician Manager, Practice Manager, and Veterinarians.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Uphold and exemplify the NPAH mission statement at all times.
  • Deliver friendly, high-quality care to outpatient clients and patients.
  • Obtain and accurately record patient histories during outpatient visits.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and procedures such as hematology, urinalysis, and serology to assist with diagnoses.
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
  • Educate clients on preventive healthcare, including vaccinations, flea and heartworm prevention, nutrition, and wellness care.
  • Provide client education on dental cleanings, senior wellness, spay/neuter, and other relevant services to encourage preventive health measures.
  • Prepare and set up rooms for outpatient appointments, ensuring equipment is clean, sterilized, and well-stocked.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, addressing questions about pet health and product use, and offering resources for ongoing care.
  • Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies in the outpatient area.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant federal and state animal health regulations, including OSHA and DEA guidelines. Report any regulatory concerns to the Practice Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Controls over Work

The Outpatient Veterinary Technician works under the direct supervision of the Veterinary Technician Manager, who assigns and reviews work for technical accuracy and adherence to established procedures. The technician exercises independence in managing recurring tasks, referring unusual situations to the supervisor.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of hospital procedures, client communication practices, and veterinary terminology.
  • Understanding of outpatient procedures, from patient intake to discharge.
  • Proficient in veterinary pharmaceutical knowledge, including drug applications and patient care.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, following directions and adapting to team needs.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments and to work well on a team.
  • Critical Thinking – understanding logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  • Frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk, and listen, frequently working in a bent position.
  • Often transports patients to weigh on scales.
  • Frequently required to communicate with clients, team members and associates. Must be able to exchange accurate information.
  • Frequently use hands to manipulate, handle or feel; will reach with hands and arms.
  • Use strength or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more active animals.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Occasionally handle dogs weighing up to and over 150 lbs. Assistance will be provided by team members when working with larger animals.

Work Environment

This role requires exposure to potentially aggressive animals, loud noises, and odors typical of a veterinary outpatient setting. Adherence to health and safety protocols is essential, including handling of hazardous materials, animal waste, and disease exposure.

Essential Functions

  • Provide quality care for outpatients with skill, compassion, and attention to detail.
  • Educate clients on preventive care and products.
  • Input and update patient data in the system accurately.
  • Maintain punctuality and reliable attendance to meet the demands of the outpatient team.
  • Strong communication and client service skills. Considerable tact and diplomacy is required. Ability to work with clients and patients in a professional, friendly, hospitable manner.
  • Work well with all team members and ensure that your actions support the hospital, the doctors, your team and the hospital mission statement.

  • Perform general physical activities that require bending, standing, stooping, moving from room to room, sit, talk, and listen; may be required to walk or stand for long periods of time; will use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently lift, carry and handle dogs weighing 50 lbs.
